**This anime is for a mature audience (18 and older).

I will be reviewing the following things with this anime: story/plot, characters, design, music, and info about the author.

Story/plot: The story centers around a young author who is tired of writing children's riddle books and is in search of something more thrilling, like Ghost Stories. He is determined to write 100 Ghost Stories. While trekking in a woods, he meets Mataichi, a bandaged man who acted as a spirit monk of sorts, Ogin, an attractive young woman, and Nagimimi, a tall man who can shape himself into anything. After meeting these three, known to be a part of the Ongyou, he follows them through their adventures, as they try to get rid of the dark "spirits" that rest in the hearts of humans. I felt the plots and story was pretty good. It is your average anime, however, executed in an original way. As most of anime shows have the use of spirits, this anime explains spirits merely to be the bad side of humans themselves, rather than a a spirit as a separate being. The plots are intriguing, and if you ca manage with the gore, it can sweep you into it. The beginning of every episode is slow for me, but after awhile it gets better. Especially whe the Ongyou arrive.

Characters: Momosuke is the main character. He is young, naive, and often called "Sensei" because of his aspirations to write Ghost Stories. He is a typical character. Rather annoying, many times stupid, and normally interferes with many plans. However, somehow he gets lucky every time. I suppose it's because of his naive nature. But as the story goes on, he begins to see some "ugly" things, which helps him grow up a little more and helps him step out of his "box".
Mataichi is my personal favorite. He is head of the Ongyou. He normally acts as a simple monk. But there is far more to him. He normally expels demons and spirits in the darkness. He's a spiritualist, often called trickster. Normally, he preaches on the darkness, kills off the "spirit" of the person who sinned and then sends them to "the other world". He's wrapped in bandages always, but he has some sharp teeth and one eye showing. He's also pretty short, but has a deep voice and smokes a pipe.
Ogin is a shapely and attractive lady within the series. She is the only one to have a backstory within the series. She has big breasts and is often the object of Momosuke's desire. She calls him pervert for spying on her when in the bathing room. She is mostly calm. She is a bit one-dimensional to me, simply meant to look good for the gentlemen.
Nagamimi is this tall guy with long dog ears, who is always shown grinning. He has two earrings in his ear and takes shape as anything. Info was brought out on him throughout the show as well. He does well with animals and Kabuki. He is the quietest of the gang.

Design: The design has nothing special about it. It has an old-school feel to it. It is quite gory and often times graphic. Outright sex scenes, and even many horrifying ways to kill, with blood and guts. The setting is not very memorable. But it does justice for the plots.

Music: One of the greatest additions to the anime. The music sounds like soft Jazz or the Blues. It's fitting for a horror. It can range up there with Ghost in the Shell, but it has it's own originality.

Author-Written by Natsuhiko Kyogoku from a series of novels. It also has a series of live action TV specials, if you would like to watch that. I might just do that.

So with this review I give this anime an 8.8/10. It's Good. It's not the best I've seen, but it is quite entertaining and good in it's ow right.
